For Dark Sky, the captivating sci-fi adventure game developed by Ganymede Games and published by Midwest Games, localization was an integral step on its journey to reaching a global audience. With its immersive gameplay and rich narrative, Dark Sky demanded careful adaptation to ensure cultural and linguistic authenticity across diverse markets. We partnered with Midwest Games once more to navigate this ambitious project, which asked us to deliver a seamless localization experience so that more players worldwide could engage in the Dark Sky experience.
Expanding Horizons Through Multilingual Localization
Localizing Dark Sky was no small feat, partly because the project required a two-tiered strategy to maximize its global presence. First, the game, which features more than 43,000 words, had to be fully localized into five core languages: Simplified Chinese (zh-CN), Russian (RU), German (DE), French (FR), and Spanish (es-ES). Then, to enhance its marketing and storefront appeal, the store copy had to be extended to include three additional languages: Japanese (JA), Korean (KO), and Portuguese-Brazilian (pt-BR).

Transcreation played a pivotal role in all of these areas, including even the title itself. which had to resonate with culturally diverse audiences. “We worked on the transcreation of the game’s title into Simplified Chinese, French, and Russian,” said Karen Rosas, Dark Sky’s localization project manager. “In each case, linguists proposed several options with detailed reasoning for the suggestions, and that enabled the developers to select names that evoked the desired emotional response in each market.”
For example, the Simplified Chinese linguists proposed the following ideas:
- 天空的奥秘 (The Mysteries of the Sky): Emphasizes the game’s exploration and enigmatic qualities.
- 暗夜苍穹 (The Dark Night Sky): Highlights the game’s atmospheric and immersive themes.
- 星空旅途 (Journey Through the Starry Sky): Captures the ethereal and adventurous tone of the gameplay.
After careful consideration, the developers chose 暗色天空 (Dark-Colored Sky) for the Simplified Chinese title. This option struck the perfect balance for them, as it captured the game’s moody, mysterious atmosphere while remaining simple and evocative for the target audience.

Overcoming Cultural and Technical Challenges
Adapting Dark Sky for players in different regions presented unique challenges that required a thoughtful approach on all fronts. One of those challenges arose when we were localizing for the Simplified Chinese version, and we realized the game’s original font lacked support for Simplified Chinese characters. Our team identified and recommended an alternative font that maintained the game’s aesthetic while also accommodating linguistic needs of the target language.
In a similar vein, our localization for the French market required a closer look at player expectations. As Karen explained, “We noticed that the pre-set keyboard commands in the game didn’t align with the AZERTY layout commonly used in France. Making key command adjustments here was critical to ensuring the game was playable and intuitive for French audiences.”

Streamlining Keywords
Another game element that required thoughtful consideration in its transcreation was the unique keyword system that Dark Sky’s developers implemented, adding an extra layer of complexity to the experience. Certain terms were intentionally left in English across all localized versions to maintain consistency and to align with the game’s branding, but this decision required extra vigilance on our part to be certain that the English terms were successfully streamlining with the target languages. As Rosas explained, “This in and of itself was an interesting challenge for our linguists and QA team, as we had to ensure the English keywords were seamlessly integrated into the localized text.”
Testing Processes
When it was time to start evaluating our work, Terra’s QA team dedicated 60 hours to meticulous game testing to ensure that every one of Dark Sky’s 43,000-plus localized words met the developers’ standards for seamless gameplay in the target languages. “The testing phase is where everything comes together,” said Rosas. “Seeing the translated elements integrating so smoothly into the gameplay is incredibly rewarding, and in this case, the feedback we got from the developers was really complimentary, especially of our team’s effective use of reference materials and consistent terminology application.”

A Unified Vision for Global Success
One aspect of our work on Dark Sky that stood out to us from the very start was the collaborative spirit, mutual trust, and open communication between Terra Localizations and the game’s development team. This genuine partnership was what made it possible to effectively adapt the game not only linguistically, but also culturally, so the gaming experience would feel natural and immersive for players worldwide.

Chris Klimecky, head of production at Midwest Games, echoed our appreciation for the real collaboration that drove this project. “We really appreciated the Terra team’s insight, expertise, and close partnership during the development of Dark Sky,” he said. “It made a big difference in making this ambitious indie title accessible to a wider audience.”
The dedication to detail and innovation that went into the Dark Sky localization process has set a high standard for future projects that we take on, and it showcases how strategic collaboration can elevate a game’s global impact.
The Takeaway
