We like to signal innovation, but when the creative stakes are high, that habit can turn AI adoption into a hunt for shortcuts instead of an actual strategy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A better approach, Bel\u00e9n says, begins with a simple shift in mindset: teams should treat <a href=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/2025\/02\/13\/ai-in-video-game-localization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI implementation as a design problem instead of a tool purchase<\/a>. In some respects, game development already teaches this lesson well. You would not ship a new combat system without testing how it feels first, just as you wouldn\u2019t bolt a quest log onto a story-driven RPG and just hope it fits. Bringing AI tools into the production loop deserves the same level of intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with the \u201cWhy\u201d Before You Touch the Workflow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/2025\/04\/10\/blending-ai-and-human-expertise-video-game-localization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Most conversations about AI adoption begin with cost and speed<\/a>. Perhaps free capacity for content that currently gets ignored, like video, images, and live events?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"149\" src=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Home_Planeta.png\" alt=\"Home_Planeta\" class=\"wp-image-11754\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe why defines what success looks like for a particular project,\u201d Bel\u00e9n says. \u201cA plan built to reduce spend will end up looking very different from a plan that\u2019s built to improve player experience, or scale accessibility, or shorten time to market without sacrificing tone.\u201d However, the plan is formulated, Bel\u00e9n offers a strong recommendation for its execution. &#8220;Make sure you know your business KPIs and protect them,\u201d she says. \u201cIf the quality of the player experience starts to suffer, you might start seeing churn, lower retention, or <a href=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/2025\/11\/06\/listening-to-players-how-feedback-shapes-localization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negative player sentiment reviews<\/a> across the board.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In game development, risk is not abstract. In fact, it can take many tangible forms, like a slightly \u201coff\u201d tutorial line that confuses the player, or a flat joke that drains a scene\u2019s energy, or even a mistranslation of an item\u2019s effect. Missteps like these menace the balance of in-game mechanics. It\u2019s little wonder that localization decisions, placed in the hands of an AI tool, can have corrosive effects on game design and community trust, especially once players start comparing versions and calling out inconsistencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build the Foundation Before You Scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the purpose for AI adoption is clear to all stakeholders, the next step is preparation. Bel\u00e9n identifies four considerations that can help determine whether AI will help or hurt your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Data.<\/strong> If you\u2019re planning to fine-tune machine translation or use an LLM enhanced with your own data sources, your translation memories and terminology need to be clean, consistent, and legally cleared. Style choices must be stable, including register and inclusive language rules; otherwise, you introduce confusion into the system\u2019s training.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/2023\/06\/27\/internationalization-laying-foundations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Source content<\/a>.<\/strong> AI cannot rescue unclear writing at scale. If the source text ignores localization best practices, then automation amplifies the mess. Tightening source quality is often a bigger win than swapping engines.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content prioritization.<\/strong> Games contain radically different types of text. UI strings, marketing taglines, lore books, store descriptions, live ops announcements, and player support articles do not all present the same risk. Classifying content by visibility, complexity, impact on end users, and <a href=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/2026\/02\/04\/research-creative-cost-ai-in-game-localization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creativity levels can help teams select an AI approach that matches the profile<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language prioritization. Not every language performs equally well under the same AI setup, and performance can change according to content type, too. A strategy that works for one market can misfire in another, so planning requires real evaluation, not assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose Pipelines that Respect Creative Stakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong AI strategy does not force everything into a single pipeline. Bel\u00e9n prefers to lay out a localization value spectrum that prioritizes premium human workflows for high-risk or high-visibility content, and continues through MT post-editing and quality estimation, all the way to fully automated MT for low-risk use cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"901\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13340\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3468013468013469;width:566px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image.png 901w, https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-768x570.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For game production, Bel\u00e9n says, the practical takeaway is simple. \u201cLocalization teams are the content experts within their organizations. They&#8217;re the people best equipped to create a content-prioritization matrix that links content types with <a href=\"https:\/\/terralocalizations.com\/2024\/05\/08\/5-must-haves-for-any-video-game-globalization-strategy\">globalization pipelines<\/a>, which allows them to be more strategic and make the most out of technology and human talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, she adds, AI applications can extend well beyond translation. \u201cYou can still use AI in supportive ways. For example, if you wanted to speed up terminology lookups, or surface style guide answers, or flag sensitive topics for review, or reduce repetitive admin tasks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bel\u00e9n also draws a useful line between automation and augmentation. GenAI is stochastic by default, which makes it a shaky choice for fully automated, deterministic tasks when precision is required. This is especially true if guardrails are not put in place. Augmentation often delivers better outcomes, as it helps experts work faster and more consistently, while keeping ownership of meaning where it belongs: in the purview of human linguists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key piece of advice from Bel\u00e9n should be a part of every localization strategy: \u201cYou must listen to your language specialists and UX experts,\u201d she says. \u201cIf they say the output is not working for a language pair or content type, treating that feedback as optional puts the brand at risk and creates burnout in the people doing the hardest work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can be a smart addition to a game localization program, but only when it serves a clear purpose and allows for human creativity to carry the experience.
